L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid found in plants, bananas and seeds. The body cannot produce this amino acid itself. In the body, L-tryptophan can be converted into serotonin and melatonin hormones. Serotonin affects mood, and low levels can cause irritability and fatigue. Melatonin, on the other hand, is a hormone produced in the brain/body that regulates the circadian rhythm.
